When artist/activist and friend of mine Abigail Gray Swartz reached out to tell me about her new public art project, I knew right away I wanted to be involved! Aptly named “City of Hidden Figures,” this nationwide project seeks to honor the power and impact of women throughout history in their local communities. The goal is to fund murals in cities across the country painted by female artists, to celebrate historical women.

Abigail was looking for a logo as well as coordinating graphics for the website, and wanted to incorporate a bold, modern palette, a symbolic rendering of three female figures emerging from the shadows. The women have a historical/retro feel, while still feeling very current and symbolic of today’s woman. The fonts also reflect a modern sensibility, in the same bright, bold colors of the figures.

In addition to the logo, I created a map of a fictional city that has dedicated it’s streets, public squares, parks and murals to important female figures. I also created a fundraising thermometer for the website.

It’s an honor to contribute to a woman-led Public Art Project such as this one, and I can’t wait to start seeing these murals pop up in cities all over the United States!
